House Windows 101: The Most Popular Styles for Homes in Dallas, TX

House windows come in a variety of styles, and if you’re a Dallas, Texas, resident considering new windows, you’re probably trying to sort through all of your options. At Woodbridge Home Exteriors, we have installed thousands of house windows since opening our doors in 1989 and know that the first step in a successful home remodel is to become familiar with the products available for your project. To that end, here is a description of a few of the more popular types of windows:

  • Double-hung – The most common style of window in Dallas, TX, is double-hung. These house windows have two sashes that slide vertically up and down in the frame and can be opened either from the top or the bottom, as opposed to single-hung windows that only have one moveable sash on the bottom. Woodbridge Home Exteriors offers double-hung windows with sashes that pivot inward to make cleaning the outside glass easy.
  • Casement – Casement house windows swing outward like a door on hinges mounted either on the left or right of the frame. They open wider than any other type of window and provide a more unobstructed view than double-hung models.
  • Awing – These rectangular house windows are hinged at the top so they open outward and are often operated by a hand crank. They can be mounted in conjunction with stationary windows to provide ventilation or installed along the upper part of a wall, making them the most common basement window.
  • Picture – As the name suggests, these large windows are designed to provide an expansive view with a minimum amount of obstruction. Picture windows do not open, so they’re categorized as fixed windows.
  • Bow or bay – Since they extend out from the house, bow and bay windows provide extra interior space. A bay window is composed of a picture window in the middle, with two smaller windows on either side. A bow window has four or five windows that create a rounded protrusion from the home.
  • Sliding – Popular in modern- or contemporary-style homes, sliding windows have track-mounted sashes that open horizontally either to the left or the right.
